Students from Pankalo Education Center, Northeast Metro 916's newest special education learning facility, will join high school students from FAIR School Downtown and Venture Academy for a unique, culturally-inspired art show.

“PROCESS”, a show title that was conceptualized by the students, represents the idea of materializing a thought or an idea into the physical world through the creative process. Students were tasked with creating original works of art on skateboards, which will be featured in an exhibition that brings youth culture, fine art, skateboarding, and self expression to a gallery setting on Jan. 18 in Minneapolis.

The show is made possible by Mark Rivard of Rivard Art Education and was funded by the 21st Century Learners Center Grant.

Pankalo Education Center is a K-8 school serving students with special needs in suburban Saint Paul, Minnesota. The school has an integrated arts theme; the goal is to provide a compassionate, creative, safe, and child centered learning environment, where students grow academically, socially, and personally, while tapping into their creativity.

Rivard was honored to bring skateboards and art to Pankalo students. “I wanted to give the students a real experience, and see them in a public show right along side their peers regardless of any challenges they may face in day to day life," Rivard said in a statement. "Every child deserves the chance to be involved in something they will be proud of, and every parent deserves to see their child given opportunities that allow them to succeed.”

The stage will be set at the perfect venue for such an ambitious display of youth talent: the iconic Twin Cities skateshop Cal Surf. Cal Surf is one of the most respected skateboard retailers in Minnesota and plays host to the Cal Surf Gallery, a second floor project space and art gallery that has hosted multiple projects, and has continually been the host of Rivard Art exhibitions.
