This school year, students in the transition program at WELS-N have been participating in community-based instruction at Value Village in St. Paul.
Community-based instruction is a teaching and learning strategy designed to target the development of functional skills, particularly for individuals with disabilities, in natural, non-school based environments. It has increased student engagement and attendance at school, and improves the life outcomes for students.
Value Village hosts WELS-N students as volunteers five days a week, for 1-2 hours per day. They practice social skills (getting along with co-workers and customers), personal management skills (arriving on time, using their work time productively), and job readiness (types of work, types of work environments, types of work duties). They also learn decision-making, how to live independently, how to access the community, and more.
