Jamie Benning spent three years as a student at WELS-North (now WELS). Today, she is an EAS at the same school where she felt supported over the years. When asked to share her journey in the newsletter, Jamie submitted an article in her own words.

My Journey at WELS

As a former student at 916, I experienced firsthand the supportive and inclusive environment that everyone provided, which helped me grow both personally and academically. The staff had a profound impact on my life, which inspired me to return to a professional role. I want to give back in the same way the commission that helped shape who I am supported me, and support students the way I was supported.

Then I met my case manager, Kate. She always listened and supported me, which made a big difference. Initially, I didn’t want to work, but by my second year, I began working at Parkview and Brimhall. I also met Shayne in Kate’s class—she taught me a lot, and we even did a fun “paint and sip” RISE event together.

In my last year, I helped run the coffee cart and the RISE store. Every morning, I made Chris his latte—even after he’d already had three coffees! I also worked with Mark and, as a 916 student at Brimhall, met Tess, my former boss, whose positive energy made work enjoyable.

After I graduated, Kristin asked if I wanted to be an EAS at WELS. I was nervous but decided to apply. My parents were initially unsure, but after discussing it, they came to support me. I started the job on September 10, 2025, and I love it! I get to see the other side of things and meet wonderful people.

At WELS, we know it’s okay to struggle. That’s why we created the Community Closet—a place for students and families in need to find support. Thanks to donations from other schools, we’ve brought smiles to many faces.

I help organize the closet and pack orders for different schools. When I first took over, it felt like a maze to navigate, but after WELS moved locations, Steve helped make it more organized and welcoming. Together, we’re making a difference—one smile at a time.

Kate has been a big part of my journey. She makes great meals and always has a warm smile. I love that she listens so well. When I told her I was getting a phone, she was proud of me because I asked my parents for it on my own—even though it surprised them!

I also shared my dream of moving out of my group home someday. Even when I doubted myself, Kate always believed in me and encouraged me to keep going. Having someone like Kate to talk to makes all the difference.

During my first two years at WELS, I met Ant. He has a great sense of humor and helped me run the RISE store when I started at WELS North. Ant has always believed I can do anything I set my mind to.

When I told him I wanted to start driving, he said, “I think you can do it—even if it’s scary, you can do anything.” His support has helped me face new challenges with confidence.

I am really looking forward to being part of such a supportive and student-centred community. As someone who experienced 916 as a student, I’m excited to now be in a position to give back, helping students feel seen, supported, and empowered, just as I was.

Thank you for reading about my journey at WELS. We are so grateful to have such a supportive community!
